On rare occasions, you may be among the unlucky few who purchase an iPhone or iPad with a dead or stuck pixel. Luckily, this is solvable through the pressure fix and heat fix methods or by using a third-party software.

I recently helped my friend fix stuck pixels on her phone. Even though she opted to get another phone later, the old one is now as good as new. You too can fix dead pixel on iPhone on your own with a few tricks that I'll provide in this article.

Fixing Stuck Pixels on iPhone and iPad

You can use third-party software to excite lazy pixels and get them out of their hibernating states. I recommend using Launch JScreen Fix. This software will help the pixels light with other picture elements. It's free, easy to use and implement and has a success rate of +60%.

  • Open the website jscreenFix.com from your phone.
  • Scroll down and select the Launch JScreen Fix button. This will start over-stimulating the picture elements causing the problem.
  • Drag the pixel fixer frame over your phone's pixel and let it run for roughly 10 minutes.
  • Now, remove the pixel fixer frame and check if the defective pixel has been fixed.

Chances are that this won't work on the first attempt. In case it doesn't, don't give up. Keep trying repeatedly.

If the issue persists even after several attempts, then the problem might be with the hardware. This will require professional assistance from the Apple Store.

Fixing Dead Pixels on iPhone and iPad

It's harder to fix dead pixels since they require hardware troubleshooting. If using a third-party software doesn't work, there are other methods you could try:

Pressure Fix

  • Use a fluff or lint-free clothing and wrap it around a pencil's eraser end or your finger.
  • Apply pressure to the screen focusing on the area with defective pixels.
  • Gently tap the screen to remove the impurities from affecting the performance of the picture element. Be careful not to press too hard.

Heat Fix

Heat fixing focuses on areas that are not filled properly and helps liquid crystal flow.

  • Warm some water. When close to boiling, pour it on a lint-free clothing.
  • Using gloves, place the cloth in a plastic bag and seal it. A sandwich bag is an excellent choice.
  • Use this to gently massage your iPhone's screen. Massage in circles, focusing on the area with detective pixels.

If none of these tips seem to work, you can always return your phone to Apple Store. You'll receive a new device thanks to Apple's warranty policy. The Apple Store representative will give you a new phone if you're still eligible for the warranty.

How Do You Detect Defective Pixels on iPhone or iPad?

The easiest way to detect these pixels is by using colored backgrounds on your phone. Perform the following:

  • Wipe off all dirt and debris from your iPhone's screen. Use a lint-free cloth for a clear view.
  • Download the Display Test Pattern iOS app from the App store.
  • After launching it, select color fill to test your phone's screen.

If you can see any dots or patches that are different from your phone's background, this means it has dead pixels. If the problem is still present on a white background, you'll see a black dot showing a dead pixel.

If you notice this pixel in other colors, then it's probably stuck pixels that are fixable.

What's the Difference Between a Stuck and a Dead Pixel?

As important as it is to fix a defective pixel, it's equally important to identify the root cause of the problem. A stuck pixel is a screen element that freezes in either green, blue or red state as directed by the sub-pixel.

A dead pixel, on the other hand, doesn't light up at all during activation. The screen displays a dark background and can only be viewed when in contrast with colored or bright white wallpapers.  Stuck pixels are easy to fix. Dead pixels may fail to function ever again.
